You're probably not reading answers here anymore but any decent converter will keep the aspect ratio, you probably just missed the option in the ones you tried. Have another look, it's usually just a simple check box "keep aspect ratio" in the video settings, sometimes near resizing options. Eg. in the one I usually use (XMedia Recode - free ), it's on the Filters/preview tab. If you uncheck it, you can make the video as tall or wide as you like. Note you can also force 16:9 in the Aspect ratio drop-down list if the source wasn't quite 16:9.
